Module Overview and Objectives
Urinalysis: Macroscopic Examination Module

Purpose

The module includes information and activities which will deal with macroscopic urinalysis, including physical testing, listing of chemical test methods, confirmatory testing, and discussion of substances that may cause discrepancies in the results obtained. This module will also explore the role that quality assurance plays in the urinalysis laboratory.

Learning and Teaching Methodology

This module is designed so it can apply to various modes of learning delivery methods. The student or instructor can use the learning activities in the module as support to a course delivered by traditional methods via a classroom setting, a stand alone online internet course, computer -assisted instruction course or with additional material as part of traditional curriculum in a degree or continuing education laboratory technology training program. Delivery method for this module can be adapted to accommodate face-to-face, online or a combination of methods customized to the individual learner or situation. Activities and resources in the module can be used to address multiple learning styles for the adult student learner. Assessments activities are varied and are flexible enough to adapt to multiple applications in the use of this module.

Module Goal and Objectives

Expectations—Assist participants in this learning activity to develop or improve skills in the process and knowledge associated with the science of urinalysis.

Instructor Objectives

  • Can use module as a stand-alone module for physical and chemical urinalysis instruction.

  • Can use module as part of whole course or any course that teaches laboratory techniques.

  • Should prepare or have access to urine specimens or comparable materials that mimic urine composition.

  • Can use module as part of course offered through instructional management system such as WebCT or Blackboard

Student Objectives—After completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Perform and interpret the results of physical and chemical testing included in routine urinalysis procedures.

  • Select appropriate backup testing for specific test strip chemical procedures.

  • Distinguish substances which can interfere with the chemical test methods rendering the results to be inaccurate.

  • Evaluate laboratory results using quality control methodologies.

The student should perform tests procedures and develop testing techniques individually and should exercise Universal Precautions when in contact with any biological specimen.
