Activity 3.1 - Testing for the Effects of Acid on Hair

In this activity the student will test the "feel" of hair after it has been soaked in a weak acid solution.

For this activity you will need:

1. A swatch of hair

2. Scotch tape

3. 1 oz. of lemon juice

4. A small dish

Begin by creating a swatch of hair and securing it with scotch tape. Place the strand in a small dish filled with the lemon juice. Allow the strand to remain in the lemon juice for at least 30 minutes. Rinse the strand with cool water. Dry the strand carefully. Run your fingers down the hair strand once it has been dried. Notice the feel of the strand. Does it feel smooth? Does it look shiny? Write your observations on an index card and set aside to compare results.
