Advertisement Images
NOTE: This module contains images created by outside sources and used as teaching tools. The images provided in this module are for educational use only. They may not be used for any commercial purpose.
  • PETA Advertisement—This advertisement is for PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals). It aims to change/alter the viewer's behavior. This advertisement can be utilized as an example in class.
  • Maxim Advertisement 1—Gender-specific advertisement. This ad may be utilized to discuss how ads appeal to a young male audience.
  • Maxim Advertisement 2—Another gender-specific advertisement. This ad may be utilized to discuss how ads appeal to a young male audience.
  • Maxim Advertisement 3—Final gender-specific advertisement. This ad may be utilized to discuss how ads appeal to a young male audience.
  • Dove Advertisements—Beauty ads that play with the self-image of the reader.
  • Stouffers Advertisement—This advertisement is for Stouffers meal products. It features a family sitting down to dinner, and directly appeals to the readers of Better Homes and Gardens.
  • Whirlpool Advertisement—Ad featuring Whirlpool dishwashers and OPI nail products. Humorous take on the domestic woman.
  • Red Cross Advertisement—Red Cross advertisement that is also included in the Powerpoint lectures.
  • Toyota Sequoia Advertisement—Toyota Sequoia advertisement that is also included in the Powerpoint lectures.
  • Mercury Milan Advertisement—Mercury Milan advertisement that is also included in the Powerpoint lectures.
  • Skin Cancer Advertisement—Skin Cancer Association advertisement that is also included in the Powerpoint lectures.
Ad Analysis Worksheets
  • Commercial/Ad Creation—In this exercise, students will be asked to design a print ad and commercial for a dish detergent company and for Nike.
  • Camera Techniques Worksheet—This worksheet should follow the lecture on camera techniques. It can be utilized as an in-class exercise, or as an exercise for a distance learning course.
  • VALS Worksheet—This worksheet should be utilized directly after the VALS lecture. In order to complete this worksheet, students will need computer/internet access. This worksheet can also be utilized for distance learning courses.
  • VALS Commercial Analysis Worksheet—In this worksheet, students will analyze three commercials using their new knowledge of the VALS System. This exercise can easily be utilized for distance learning courses.
  • Analyzing Target Audience, Setting, Props, and Clothing—Worksheet for students to practice analyzing target audience, setting, props, & clothing. Can be utilized in class as a supplement to the lecture, or as a distance learning assignment. Instructors may want to have students scan and email copies of the ad's they choose.
Writing Assignments
  • Advanced Ad Analysis Paper: Composition I—This is the assignment sheet for an advertisement analysis paper to be utilized in Composition I courses. In the paper, students will be asked to analyze two advertisements (for the same type of product) that appeal to two distinct audiences. This paper should be utilized as the final assignment for the module.
  • Intermediate Ad Analysis Paper: Composition I—This is the assignment sheet for an advertisement analysis paper to be utilized in Composition I courses. In the paper, students will be asked to analyze one advertisement of their choice. This assignment can be utilized for Composition I courses that are less advanced with their writing skills. The assignment should be utilized as the final assignment for the module.
  • Ad Analysis Paper: Developmental Writing—This is the assignment sheet for an advertisement analysis paper to be utilized in Developmental Writing courses. It is similar to the Composition I assignment, but students will only be asked to analyze one advertisement of their choice. This assignment should be utilized as the final assignment for the module.
Sample Paper
  • Single Ad Analysis: Sample Paper—This file is a sample ad analysis paper that should be reviewed in class. It utilizes the Mercury Milan advertisement that was provided in the Powerpoint lectures. It would be helpful to look this paper over after reading the writing/reading assignment sheets to your students. Use this paper as an example for how a single advertisement analysis should be structured/written.

Reading Assignment
  • Ad Analysis Assignment: Developmental Reading—This is the assignment sheet for an advertisement analysis exercise to be utilized in Developmental Reading courses. It is similar to the Composition I assignment, but students will be asked to analyze an advertisement of their choice by answering questions provided on this assignment sheet. The assignment should serve as the final assignment for the module. In addition to this assignment, instructors may have students present their advertisement to the class and discuss their analysis
