Technical Instructors Workshop:
An Integrated Approach to Curriculum Design, Implementation, and Evaluation

Presented by Stephen Herd,
Automotive Instructor, Brookhaven College

Sponsored by the Texas Collaborative for Teaching Excellence

July 27-29, 2004—Midland College Advanced Technology Center
August 10-12, 2004—St. Philips College

Audience: All Instructors Teaching Technical Programs

In this three day seminar, we will demonstrate an integrated approach to curriculum design, implementation and evaluation. The presentation will lead instructors through the process of creating a course syllabus, skill centered lab sheets, and an evaluation tool. This will enable instructors to clearly communicate course objectives to students, monitor and evaluate student progress and effectively communicate this information to students in a timely manner.

The complete package used in this seminar will consist of the following:

  • Software that supports faculty in the development of course materials, including templates for a course syllabus, lab sheets and grade sheets.
  • Samples of course materials that can be used for training and in the classroom.
  • An instruction manual for faculty to review the material presented in the seminar.

Issues to be addressed:

  • Sorting objectives by domain, level and sequence
  • Assigning objective evaluation criteria—quantity, quality and efficiency standards
  • Defining level of performance—beginner, intermediate and advanced
  • Determining activity type—remediation, core and enrichment
