This course is designed for faculty new to the community college teaching environment, whether they are full-time or part-time instructors.

Week 1: Who Are We and What is Our Mission?

  • Creating our Blackboard homepages
  • Introducing ourselves (and our institutions!)
  • Exploring the general mission of two-year colleges

Week 2: Pedagogy vs. Andragogy

  • Discussing how working with adult students differs from working with children and adolescents
  • Reflecting on what motivates adult learners

Week 3: What is Learning and How is It Related to Teaching?

  • Exploring the learning pyramid
  • Rediscovering Bloom's taxonomy and Maslow's hierarchy

Week 4: Exploring How People Learn

  • Recognizing learning styles
  • MBTI
  • Multiple intelligences

Week 5: Linking Teaching to Learning

  • Reflecting on and discussing our teaching styles
  • Designing active, experiential, and cooperative learning experiences to optimize learning

Week 6: Reality Check—Why Multiple Choice Isn't Enough

  • Examining the relationship between teaching, learning and assessment of learning
  • Identifying best practices, i.e. authentic assessment
